John Edgar Hoover was born on January 1st, 1895
and died on May 2nd, 1972. He was the first Director of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. He was also appointed
director of the Bureau of Investigation which turned into the FBI. In the 920’s
he helped organize the Palmer raids. He monitored a variety of U.S. radicals
with the intent to punish, arrest, or deport them. Targets during this period
included Marcus Garvey, Rose Pastor Stokes, Cyril Briggs, Emma Goldman, Alexander
Berkman, and future Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter; whom Hoover
maintained was "the most dangerous man in the United States".
